DPP monitoring anti-DPP public servants

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has said most government departments have anti-DPP members and there is need to tread carefully to ensure that the party and its members do not suffer.

The remarks come amid the removal of district commissioners (DCs), council chief executive officers (CEOs) and other officials in senior government positions.

Speaking at a party meeting on Saturday in Mzuzu, DPP secretary general (SG) Eckleni Kudontoni said a number of government officials, including council CEOs, do not wish DPP well and some openly insult the party and want to destroy it. He said any official working against the party will have to step down.

Kudontoni said DPP has to guard against such officials as its members are being discriminated against by the officials.

Said Kudontoni: “Most government departments have people who do not wish DPP well.”

Asked to clarify his statements and if the party was interfering in government business, Kudontoni said the party receives reports that some CEOs are participating in party politics and work against DPP.

He said the party will report to responsible authorities about anti-DPP public servants for redress.

Chancellor College associate professor of political science Blessings Chinsinga said civil servants should not be victimised for not supporting DPP. .

“It is a known fact that civil servants have political affiliations, but they have to be professional,” said Chinsinga.

He said government has to come up with reforms that will ensure a merit— based civil service.
